Walter “Walt” L. Castleman

Walter “Walt” L. Castleman, 66, of Springfield, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021 after a short battle with bladder cancer. He was born January 26, 1955, the son of Orville Leroy and Julia Marie (Sexton) Castleman. He married Mary F. Smith on June 13, 1981, enjoying 40 years of marriage and she survives.

Also suriving are three daughters: Rebecca (Greg) Martin of Hallsville, TX, Jennifer (Patrick) Baker of Springfield and Bree (Daniel) Fox of Elkhart; seven grandchildren: Cameron Baker, Kayla Weis, Scarlet Fox, Lauren (Garrison) Box, Alyssa Butler, Kylie Martin, and Lyla Martin; one great-grandchild, Emelia Box; and two brothers: Orville Castleman and Richard (Alice) Castleman, both of Springfield.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Nicholas Castleman; two sisters: Joanne Peacock and Anita Huff; one granddaughter, Violet Fox; and nephew, Curt Smith.

Walt attended Lanphier High School. Over the years, he worked at Fiat Allis Chalmers, Ray’s Chili, Westlake Equipment, and The Springfield Park District. He retired from wearing his many hats in 2015.

Walt was a funny man and never knew a stranger. He was a hard worker and enjoyed helping his friends, family and neighbors. He loved playing his drums and listening to loud music.  He played drums for Little Hollywood Band and several others in the area. Walt enjoyed building and inventing things in his garage, the Chicago Cubs, NASCAR, watching old Sci-Fi movies, and playing washers. Above all else, he loved his wife, children and grandchildren deeply.

Memorial Gathering: 4 – 7 pm, Friday, September 17, 2021 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
