Mortimer B. Cameron, Jr, 98, of Conneaut, Ohio left us peacefully on Thursday morning, June 19, 2025, surrounded by family. The beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather will be remembered for his passion for life and competitive spirit.
Born on May 20, 1927, in Pittsburgh, PA, Mort was the only son of Mortimer Sr and Louise Cameron and brother to Nancy Dickinson. He grew up in the Edgewood area of Pittsburgh but spent many a summer on Lake Erie and Lake Weslemkoon (Ontario). He left high school early to attend The Citadel for a year. He subsequently received an appointment to the United States Military Academy and graduated in 1949. Commissioned in the newly formed US Air Force branch of service, he soon found himself in combat, flying reconnaissance missions in the Korean War. After completing 100 missions (and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals) he returned to the United States and served in multiple assignments, including a tour at Spangdahlem (Federal Republic of Germany). He completed his active-duty service in 1961 and returned to Pittsburgh. There he served in the Air Force Reserve finishing with a total of 20 years of military service. He had a successful career as a stockbroker in multiple brokerages and eventually became the branch manager for the Paine Webber office in Greensburg, PA. During this period, he actively engaged in regional USMA graduate activities including serving as the West Point Western Pennsylvania Society President. He retired in 1990 to settle in Conneaut, Ohio.
His time was spent golfing, boating, fishing, reading and sharing the enjoyment of Lake Erie with family and friends. Everyone benefited from his passion for gardening. He commissioned stained glass windows commemorating family to be enjoyed by many in the Conneaut Library.
On August 29, 1953, Mort married the love of his life, Elsa Morris of Squirrel Hill. The two shared a wonderful life for 60 years. Together they had 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Elsa.
Mort is survived by his sons Duncan (Monica) and David (Betty), daughter Mary Danka (Robert) as well as grandchildren Mary Margaret Cameron, Stuart Cameron (Andrea), Elizabeth Danka, Caroline Danka (Vincenzo Anoja), Gwen Cameron, Jack Cameron, Paige Cameron, and great grandchildren Annabelle Cameron, Rebecca Cameron, Benjamin Cameron, Angelo Anoja, and Stuart Anoja.
Services and burial in Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers donate to the charity of your choice in his honor.
Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, PA is assisting with the arrangements.
