Representatives who helped bring the Sierra Flats affordable housing project into reality joined together Thursday morning to officially cut the ribbon on the city’s newest complex.
The project began in 2019 after Carson City put out a request for projects on the piece of property owned by the city that they wanted to see turned into one of the city’s greatest needs: affordable housing.
In total, the project provides 160 units of price-capped housing.
The project saw a number of setbacks since then, including COVID issues, lumber shortages after the West Coast’s largest lumber mill burned down, Trump-era tax cuts limiting funding for affordable housing, and more.
The first phase, Sierra Flats Senior, provides 75 units to seniors with an Area Median Income (AMI) of 30% to 50% and began welcoming its first residents in February.
The second phase of the project is for family housing, which caps rental prices at 60% AMI and offers one, two, and three bedroom units.
Representatives from West States Property Management, Oikos Development Corp., OCM Builders, the Nevada Housing Coalition, Reno Housing Authority, and local dignitaries were on site to celebrate the complex.
Mayor Lori Bagwell cut the ribbon held by former Senator Mike Schneider and Chico Clark of Oikos Development.
Initially, Governor Joe Lombardo was slated to attend, but Madeline Armstrong attended as a representative of the Governor’s Office.
The first two buildings in the development are full, while the third and fourth buildings are currently leasing to new residents, and are expected to fill up quickly.
