William R. Cokins

William R. Cokins “Bill” died unexpectedly March 17, 2021 in Chicago, IL.  He was born February 23, 1965 in Chicago, IL.
Bill leaves behind his loving wife of 34 years, Eileen (Burke); their two children of whom he was so very proud, John (partner Becca) and Jessica; his mom, Pam (Sumner); sister, Rebecca Hammer (Mike); his sisters and brothers in law and life (John, Sheila & Mitchell,  Maureen & Aleksey, and Chris); nieces and nephews (Caitlin, Sam, & Ryan, Patrick & Alexandra,  Eliana & Liam,); goddaughters (Tess & Vika) and countless friends. Bill was preceded in death by his father, John.

Next to his children, Bill’s proudest accomplishment was becoming a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries. Bill lived around the world and traveled the planet with his wife and family, adapting to and adopting cultural nuances. Amsterdam was home in his heart.

Bill’s interests were wide-ranging and ever-evolving.   Politics, history, art, cooking, tennis and football were constants.  In his immediate post-retirement years, he explored courses in wooden ship-building, bread baking, and culinary arts.  Bill most recently began mentoring immigrant children.  His Amazon wish list was … eclectic.

He loved all kinds of music, though Bill loved to joke, “If it’s not Bob Dylan, it’s crap.”   An avid reader and voracious consumer of world and financial news, his actuarial background seasoned strong, well-supported opinions.  Bill famously announced, “GM is broke and they don’t even know it” years before GM actually went broke.  He could spend hours discussing the ramifications of anything from interest rates and tax policy to campaign strategy and world politics, preferably while at a Packer tailgate.

Bill was a man of great integrity and unmerciful honesty.  He will be missed by all.

A private memorial will be held for family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Feeding America at feedingamerica.org
