William Eugene Detwiler

William ‘Bill’ Eugene Detwiler, 90, went to his heavenly home on May 31, 2021. Born on October 6, 1930 in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, to a hard-working coal miner father and a kind and loving homemaker mother. His formative years found him surrounded by his three sisters and four brothers. He served in the U.S Army in the artillery division during the Korean War, rising to the rank of Sergeant. Not one to ever shy from hard work, he was employed as a bricklayer for 57 years in and around Akron, Ohio, where his family had relocated before he returned home from the war. Of those 57 years, the last 41 were as a partner with his brothers and later, nephew, in BG&R Construction. He loved to work alongside his brothers and nephews and talked of those times often as being some of the best of his life. When not at work, his favorite pastimes were helping his father in the family garden and spending time with his many nieces and nephews when they would call him on the phone to come for a visit. Bill was also a devout and faithful member of the Marlboro Assembly of God, where he would worship with his much adored church family. To those that knew him, he was the kindest of souls that would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Although he never married, he was always surrounded by family that loved and appreciated him for all of the things that he did to make their lives better. He passed away peacefully in Fletcher, North Carolina, where he has resided the last 3 years, close to his loving brother Barry and his family. He was a one-of-a-kind son, brother, and uncle that will truly be missed for his kindness, love, and the impact that he made on the world around him.

Bill was preceded in death by his father and mother, Mack and Mildred Detwiler, his brothers, Donald ‘Jack’ and Ronald ‘Ken’ Detwiler, his sisters, Shirley ‘Hon’ Detwiler, Lois Gordon, and Joanne Allgood. He is survived by his brothers, Gerald (Diane) Detwiler and Barry (Mary) Detwiler; brother-in-law, William Allgood; sister-in-law, Sherry Detwiler; and many, many treasured nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. An Inurnment Graveside Memorial service and Celebration of Bill’s Life is planned for a later date.
