Walter T. Marek

Walter T. Marek

Walter T. Marek was born April 23, 1928, in Harvey, Illinois, to Walter and Pearl (Petrova) Marek.  He passed away on June 7, 2021, at Golden Years of Walworth.

Wally grew up in Harvey, Illinois, and attended Thornton Township High School. He was a pole vaulter for the high school track team and caddied at Calumet Country Club to help earn money for his family throughout his high school years. Being a caddie during school sparked a strong passion for the game of golf, and Wally was a scratch golfer for much of his life.

After graduating high school in 1945, Wally enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and completed boot camp at Paris Island. He was stationed in Quantico, VA, and honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. He then went on to attend the University of Illinois, Champaign Urbana, on the GI Bill and received a degree in Accounting. He subsequently earned his Certified Public Accounting (CPA) license.

Wally’s accounting career began at Pete Marwick Mitchell, a public accounting firm, where he met his future wife, Betty Dolinar, who was a secretary at the firm. Wally later joined Sears Roebuck and Company where he worked for 28 years. He finished his career at Sears as Senior Vice President of Accounting & Finance.

After retirement, Wally volunteered at multiple organizations. He also enjoyed playing golf several times a week, but the highlight of his golf career goes back to 1981 when he played a round of golf with Arnold Palmer.

While their children were growing up, Wally and Betty enjoyed spending time with their family in the Lake Geneva area. Boating was always a part of the fun.

Betty and Wally celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on May 5, 2021.

Walter is survived by his wife Elizabeth A. (Dolinar), whom he married on May 5, 1956; his children Barbara (David) Taylor, Bob (Diane) Marek, Joanne (Dave) Prudden, and Tom (Torye) Marek; grandchildren Bobby Marek, Scott (Samantha) Prudden, Joe (Paige) Prudden, Amy (Jason) Tippy, Randy (Jessica) Prudden, and Nicki Marek; great grandchildren Maddie, Owen, Blake, Francine, Charlie, and Leo; sister Camille Wilson; and sister-in-law Elaine Marek.

He was preceded in death by his brothers John Marek and Richie Starzyk.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held at Golden Years, in Walworth. Date and time to be determined.
