Thomas Eugene Halberstadt

Thomas Eugene Halberstadt, 73, of Springfield, passed away at 2:45 am, Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, IL.  He was the son of Albert Francis “Bud” and Frances Halberstadt.  He married Sharon M. Gruver in 1968 and she died in 1990.  He then married Pat Anderson on August 21, 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; three daughters, Susan (Matt) Mushill of Wood River, Stephanie Smith of Oklahoma and Angela (Patrick) Ryan of Springfield; son, Miles (Vivian) Anderson of Springfield; eight grandchildren, Sean, Michael and Aiden Ryan, Michael and Sharon Mae Smith, Sophie Anderson, Libby (Carrick) Younkin and Luke Beane; three great grandsons, Logan and Kaleb Burris and Miles Younkin; three sisters, Ann (Mark) Vercel and Brenda (Tim) Kelly, both of Milwaukee and Beth Halberstadt of Georgia; one sister-in-law, Christine Pluff of Florida; one brother-in-law, Wade Pluff of Florida; one niece, one nephew; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Thomas was a veteran in the U.S. Army (1966-1969), serving in Vietnam in 1968, receiving various medals and citations, including 2 Purple Hearts.  He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 159, VFW Post #755.

He was employed by Porta School District 202, retiring in 2012. He attended Athens Christian Church.

Memorial Gathering:  10 – 11 am, Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at Athens Christian Church.  The Purple Heart Honor Guard will conduct their service during the gathering.

Memorial Service: 11:00 am, Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at Athens Chrisitian Church, with Pastor Ken Gennicks officiating.

A procession to the graveside service will begin at 1:15 pm, Tuesday, November 2, 2021 from Athens Christian Church to Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Inter-Veterans Burial Detail and the U.S. Army.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Athens Christian Church or the Quincy Veterans Home Museum.
