Samuel J. Pitt, Sr., 85, of Springfield, died at 6:50 am, Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Taylorville Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born on August 16, 1936 in Berlin, IL to Howard W. and Mary Rozena (Burger) Pitt, Sr. He married Judith Moore on March 26, 1960.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judith of Springfield; daughter, M. Elaine (Larry) Bradley of Springfield; son, Sam (Laura-Lee) Pitt, Jr. of Chandler, AZ; three granddaughters, Emily (Eric) Carmouche, Allison (Kyle) Avery and Chelsea Pitt; three step grandchildren, Christina (Johnny) Harris, Angy (Adrian) Price and Lara (Brad) Isaacs; two step great granddaughters, Lindsay Nicole Allan and Hannah Reichert and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, six sisters and three step great grandchildren.
Sam served in the United States Air Force. He retired from the Illinois Secretary of State. He was of the Catholic Faith.
Sam had a great sense of humor. He liked to fish, golf and go camping. He was an excellent baker and made the best chilli.
Visitation: 10:30 am – 12:30 pm, Monday, April 25, 2022 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Funeral Service: 12:30 pm, Monday, April 25, 2022 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with Reverend Jeff Grant officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Protective League or the Alzheimer’s Association.
