Marietta Powell Cloud

Marietta Powell Cloud, 86, passed away on April 4 in Hendersonville, NC.  She was born November 13, 1935, in Connersville, IN.

Marietta graduated from Alquina High School in 1953, among a class of 13 students which included her future husband and the love of her life, Lewis Cloud.

In 1969, Marietta and Lewis moved to Cullowhee, NC, which was to remain their home for the remainder of their lives.  She attended Western Carolina University, graduating in 1975 with a master’s degree in library sciences, and taught at Camp Lab and Smoky Mountain Schools until her retirement.

The great joys of Marietta’s life were music, the church, her family, her soul sisters, and rainbows.  She was the pianist and organist at Cullowhee United Methodist Church for more than 40 years and was passionate about celebrating life’s milestones – weddings, funerals, baptisms, and holidays – through music.

Marietta is predeceased by her parents, Floyd and Edna Powell, and a brother, Max Powell, of Connersville, IN.  She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Lewis Cloud; three sons, Steve Cloud (Meg Brown Cloud) of Hattiesburg, MS, Jeff Cloud (Bonny Reece Cloud) of Hendersonville, NC, Craig Cloud (Angie High Cloud) of Gaborone, Botswana; brothers Maurice Powell of Milton, IN, and Mark Powell of Connersville, IN; and many beloved sisters-in-law, nephews, and nieces.

Nothing brought greater joy to Marietta’s life than being Mimi to her adored grandchildren Cameron Cloud (McKenna) of Jackson, MS, Brandon Cloud of Hattiesburg, MS, 1^stLt Corey Cloud, USAF, (Sarah) of Warner Robins, GA, Christa Cloud Tipton (Jacob) of Pisgah Forest, NC, Wallace Anne Cloud of Washington, DC, and John Beck Cloud of Washington, DC.

A celebration of Marietta’s life will be held at Cullowhee United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 8, with Rev. David Reeves officiating.  There will be no formal visitation.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marietta’s honor to Cullowhee United Methodist Church (UMC), P.O. Box 1267, Cullowhee, NC 28723.
