Richard “Dick” Donels, 82, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. A celebration of life with burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg, Iowa, will take place in the spring of 2023.

Dick was born April 5, 1940, in Shellsburg, the son of Leon and Frances (Albert) Donels. He was united in marriage to Rebecca Jo Matzen on June 18, 1960, in Shellsburg. Dick started as a bricklayer for Pesek Masonry and retired as General Manager in 2010. He was a member of BAC Local 3 Iowa. Dick enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching sports – especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.

Survivors include his children, Darcy (David) McGuire, Scott (Angie) Donels, and Jodi (Eric) Olson, all of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Kailey (Eric) Sells, Kara McGuire, Heather (Dan) Farley, Kaleb Donels (fiancée, Caitlin), Alyssa (Jason) Gingrich, and Alex Olson; siblings, Joan Jewett of Duncan, S.C., Stanley (Donna) Donels of Cedar Rapids, and Dwayne Donels of Arizona; sister-in-law, Carol Kindl of Cedar Rapids; good friend and companion, Beatrice Schmidt of Cedar Rapids; his dogs, Buttons and Tiny; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Donels; parents, Leon and Frances Donels; brothers, Dennis Donels and Dean Donels; sisters-in-law, Jan Donels and Yvonne Donels; brother-in-law, Robert Jewett; great-grandson, Arlen Farley; niece, Heidi Donels; and his dog, Harley.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a fund to be established.
