Margaret (Ma Khin Win Kyi) Tin
- January 25, 2021
Margaret Tin entered the next life on January 24, 2021. She was born on January 14, 1929 in Yandoon, Burma (Myanmar) to parents U Pe Soe (father) and Daw Khin Lay (mother). Husband Maung Hla Aye (Willie) Tin preceded her in death in 1990.
Margaret’s greatest life achievement was the success of her children, who all earned graduate degrees: Howard A. Tin, Psy.D. (Sue), Angela A. Tin (James P. O’Brien) and grandson Brendan A. O’Brien (Fiancé Vidya Fleetwood, M.D.).
Margaret was the niece of U Thant, the third secretary-general of the United Nations 1961-1971. Margaret became a proud U.S. citizen in 1962 and was a friend to many new Americans from other cultures and beliefs. She enjoyed playing cards with a group of friends she had known for decades.
Margaret enjoyed travel to India, Singapore, Caribbean islands, and China as well as New York, Florida and Mississippi. She enjoyed cruises, shopping with her daughter, wearing beautiful clothes and cosmetics. She cooked and made deserts; she never exactly followed recipes. She generously shared a taste of Burmese cooking with whoever might drop in for a visit. She especially loved Chinese and Indian take-out food.
Margaret was an exceptional woman.
Buddhist teachings were her compass. Memorials may be sent to: Satipatthana Vipassana Association, P.O Box 5508, Springfield, IL 62705-9601.
