Joyce was born June 29, 1943, in the family home in Iowa City, the daughter of William and Janet (Lockwood) Grandrath. She was a 1961 graduate of City High School. Joyce was a graduate of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and served in the Army Nurse Corps from 1965 to 1967, during the Vietnam War. Joyce was very involved in her children’s lives. She was a Girl Scout Leader, past president of the Longfellow PTA, and was involved with their activities at Southeast Junior High. The family hosted exchange students from Germany and the Czech Republic.

Most important to Joyce was her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.
