John D. Kerske, 74, of Roach, MO (Lake of the Ozarks) died at 12:15 am, September 9, 2022 at Lake Regional Hospital. He lived most of his life in Springfield, IL, before moving to Lake of the Ozarks in 2005.
He was born May 3, 1948 in Springfield, IL, the son of William E. Kerske, Sr and Lucille “Kelly” (Shinnick) Kerske. Preceding him in death were his parents; sisters, Marilyn Martin and Nancy Perry; brother, Robert (Bobby) Kerske, Sr. and his fur baby pug, Lucy Lu. He was raised in Springfield, IL and graduated from Lanphier High School in 1966 and attended Springfield College in Illinois, Southern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and Sangamon State University.
Mr. Kerske served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1973. He retired from the State of Illinois, Department of Transportation in August 2002 after 35 years of service. He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #437 in Springfield, IL. He was an avid bass fisherman and a former member of Illini Bass Anglers and Railsplitter’s Bass Club.
Survived by his lifelong companion Rose Williams of Roach, MO; two brothers, William (Billy) Kerske, Jr. of Springfield and James “Jimmy” L. Kerske (Sarah “Sammy”) of Pleasant Hill, MO and two sisters, Linda Kerske of Longmont, CO and Kathy Dunlap (Brock) of New Berlin, IL; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.
Remains are at Staab Funeral Home, 1109 S 5th St, Springfield, IL 62703 where friends and family may call from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, Friday, October 14, 2022. A short service will take place at 1:00 followed by burial at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield with the Sangamon County Inter-Veteran’s Burial Detail and the United States Army conducting military honors.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post #4763, 214 W. Chestnut St., Chatham, IL 62629.
