Issac Joel McGraw

Issac Joel McGraw, 72, of Hendersonville, NC, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2021. Joel was born April 10, 1948 to the late Hesterly and Josie Cairnes McGraw. Joel was also preceded in death by his wife, Florence Wheeler McGraw; brothers, Hesterly McGraw Jr. and Dennis Ray McGraw. 

Joel spent most of his career painting with Florence as painting contractors for over 30 years. Together, they painted many, many houses and churches. When not at work Joel enjoyed camping, going to amusement parks with his young family and playing cards with extended family and friends. Later on, he spent a lot of time racing at drag strips around the south. Above all Joel was an entertainer. He loved to tell jokes, ghost stories and family tales. Now, if the listener chose to believe all those tales that was up to them. It seemed like no matter where Joel went he ran into people he knew. 

He is survived by his son, Michael Joel McGraw and his wife Pam; grandsons Michael Chad McGraw (Jasmine) and Steven Joel McGraw (Madden); great-grandchildren Addie, Asher, Esmae and Roman McGraw, all of Richmond, Va. Daughter, Lisa McGraw Coomer and her husband Brian; grandsons Jesse Edward Coomer (Wendy) and Michael Isaac Coomer (Anna), all of Madison County, NC. Several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews also survive him. 

Joel also left behind many friends. Craig Burroughs who helped Joel very much in his final months. Gary McCall who was a longtime friend, racing buddy and general partner in crime. Friend and brother in-law Joe Quinn, who became Joel’s spiritual advisor in their later years. His lifelong friend and someone he loved as a brother Foy Edenfield. Joel and Foy grew up together running the streets of Hendersonville and remained close friends throughout the years, until Joel’s final day. 

The family would like to express their never-ending gratitude to the staff of both Advent Health Care and the Elizabeth House. Their care for Joel and concern they extended to his family was both unsurpassed and a true blessing. 

For those who wish to pay their respects or voice any grievances, Joel will be laid to rest beside Florence in the mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hendersonville, NC. A memorial will be planned for a later date.
