Dr. Joanne Marie Maurer, DDS

Joanne Marie Maurer, DDS, of Springfield died at 11:18 pm, Tuesday, February 1, 2022. She was born December 6, 1956 in Springfield to Dr. Joseph Jude and Rosetta (Tega) Maurer. She married Dr. Mark Gekas, DDS on July 4, 1994.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Mark Gekas, DDS of Springfield; son, Robert Gekas (Lacee); daughter, Demitria Gekas; seven siblings, Mary Rose (Tom) Hoffman of Springfield; Joseph J. (Lisa) Maurer, Jr., Honorable Matthew J. (Kristina ) Maurer of Springfield, Linda Shoemaker of Riverton, Diane Howard (Rex Bruss), Dr. Susan Maurer, DMD (Denise Wend) of Springfield and Daniel A. (Rachael) Maurer of Springfield; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and her dogs, Petunia, Daisy, Bell & Ace.

She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and two brothers, John A. Maurer and Dr. Christopher L. Maurer.

Joanne was a graduate of Lanphier High School in 1974. She was a summa cum laude graduate of Loyola University at Chicago School of Dentistry. She was a member of the Illinois State Dental Society, American Dental Association, and G.V. Black Dental Society.

She was a Dentist, who practiced in Springfield for over 30 years.

Joanne was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. She was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. She enjoyed singing, playing the guitar, and piano. She helped her parents raise her nine younger siblings and took excellent care of them. She would go out of her way to help anyone in need, even if it was a hindrance on herself. She loved spending time with family and friends that she called family. Joanne will be missed and forever in our hearts.

Visitation: 10 am – 12 pm, Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at St. Agnes Church.

Funeral Mass: 12 pm, Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at St. Agnes Church with Reverend Daniel Bergbower officiating. Burial will follow at Old Salem Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Carol Jo Vecchie Center.
