- May 7, 2021
Doris “Betty” S. Cross, age 89 passed away peacefully at home on May 3, 2021. She was born July 20, 1931 in Bower, WV and moved to Williamsburg when she was just a little girl. Betty graduated from Matthew Whaley High School in 1948. As a teenager, she worked at Roses where she met her husband of 64 years, Jim Cross. She went on to work at Camp Peary, where she retired in 1991.
To say that Betty was loved by all that knew her is an understatement. She was a life-long member of James River Baptist Church and a true Christian woman who always put others needs above her own. She taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and attended church every Sunday. Betty exuded faith, compassion, loyalty, love, kindness and never spoke an ill word about anyone. Having a deaf son with disabilities, she became an advocate for children with special needs and always took time to spend with those that needed it. Betty would spend her Sunday afternoons after Church visiting shut-ins and friends. She was known for always sending cards for every occasion to all she knew and loved. She loved her family and friends beyond measure and always spent as much time with them as she could.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Carlie and Oletha Stout; her husband, Jim Cross; brother, Bill Stout; sister, Wanda Heath Phillips and son, Ted Cross. She is survived by her Brother, Carl “Happy” Stout (Vina); Daughter, Mary Jane Hogge (Johnny); Son, Gary Cross; Granddaughters, Paige Kirkpatrick (Robbie) and Katie Reavis (Kevin); 7 Great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson. She also had many nieces and nephews that she loved like her own.
Family will receive visitors Monday, May 10, 2021 at James River Baptist Church from 2-3 pm with service to immediately follow. Service will be live-streamed though JRBC FB for those unable to attend the service. Donations can be made in her name to James River Baptist Church, 4931 Centerville Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
