Darrell Allen Sample

Darrell Allen Sample, 74, of Sherman, IL sadly passed away on May 31, 2022.

He is survived by his children, Dane Sample (Mallory) of St. Louis, MO, Devan Pfeiffer (Jeff Cocagne) of Sherman, IL, and Darci Thompson (Trevor) of Petersburg, IL, his sister Karen Hill (Tom) of Crown Point, IN, six grandchildren: Reed, Claire, Liam, Samuel, Noelle, and Abram, and his beloved dog, Maggie. He is preceded in death by his parents, Darrell and Patricia Sample.

Darrell, better known as “Al”, was a graduate of Greenville College in Greenville, IL. Following graduation, he served in the army as a Military Police Officer and upon discharge enjoyed a career as a detective in Sangamon County, as well as working for the Loami and Pleasant Plains police departments. In his retirement, Al spent time working in the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office and enjoyed running a mowing business with his son for many years (Sample and Son Mowing). Over the last several years, Al served as a United Methodist Pastor in Easton, IL, Mount Pulaski, IL, and Middletown, IL.

Al was proud of his three children and took great joy in his six grandchildren. He was excited about his daughter’s upcoming wedding this summer and the birth of his seventh grandchild early this fall. He loved to see pictures of his kids and grandkids posted on social media and shared funny jokes and tidbits in a family group chat almost daily. He enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing, riding his bike, mowing his lawn and riding his side by side.

A visitation will be held in his honor from 9 am – 11 am on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at Staab Funeral Home in Sherman, IL. A funeral service will follow at 11 am with burial to follow at Fancy Creek Cemetery in Sherman, IL.
