Charlotte M. Machacek, 97, of Wheaton, Ill., formerly of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2022, at Anthology of Wheaton Memory Care. A Vigil Service will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, where a visitation will follow until 6 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, with the Rev. David O’Connor officiating. Burial will take place at Lafayette Cemetery in rural Alburnett, Iowa.
Charlotte was born on Aug. 18, 1924, in Center Point, Iowa, the daughter of Adlai B. and Myrtle M. (Notbohm) Stephenson. She was a 1943 graduate of Alburnett High School. Charlotte was united in marriage to George J. Machacek on Oct. 18, 1949, in Marion, Iowa. To this union, two daughters were born, Beverly and Norma. Charlotte worked several years for the late Dr. Phil Crew in Marion. She later worked as a sales associate for Armstrongs in Cedar Rapids, until her retirement. Charlotte devoted her life to volunteering and service. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she helped with the lunchroom and bus programs at the school, and later coordinated and served funeral dinners for more than 20 years. Charlotte was one of the first female members of Lions Club, nationwide. Her membership began with the former Marion Host Lions Club for over 30 years, and later transferred to the Alburnett Lions Club. Charlotte was also a member and volunteer for the Alburnett Historical Society, St. Joseph’s Women’s Connection, and volunteered countless hours at the Iowa Lion’s Eye Bank in Iowa City. When she wasn’t busy volunteering, Charlotte enjoyed cooking, gardening and canning. She also loved to play cards and Dominos. Charlotte will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Charlotte is survived and lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Beverly (Eugene) Bordelon of Warrenville, Ill., and Norma Machacek of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two grandchildren, Scott (Lisa) Bordelon of Lake Zurich, Ill., and Amanda (Matthew George) Bordelon of Lindon, Utah; four great-grandchildren, Connor and Kara Bordelon and Lucas and Elizabeth George; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 65 years, George Machacek; and two brothers and their wives, Robert (Wilma) Stephenson and Charles (Betty) Stephenson.
