Allie O’Nita Merritt

Allie Onita (Nita) Martin Merritt passed away at the age of 91 on Friday, May 12, 2023, surrounded by family in Granbury Texas. She was born at home in Flomot, Texas on June 8, 1931to Wade A. and Opal Ella (Barton) Martin. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Texas Tech University in 1958, and her Master’s Degree in Education from West Texas State University in 1964. She taught elementary school for 30 years, where she focused hundreds of children to read and write.

 

She married Coyle Ervin Merritt on November 2, 1950, at Whiteflat, Texas, and together they had two sons. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and she was also passionate about her hobbies that included quilting, sewing, and gardening. She was active in the Acton Methodist Church, where she loved, and was loved dearly by, her many friends there.

 

Nita was proceeded in death by her husband, parents, and her two brothers, Wilburn Z. and Herbert A. Martin. She is survived by her sister, Wayde (Ronald Clay) of Flomot, Texas, her two sons and their wives, Tom and Cheryl (Bryant) Merritt, and Steve and Susan (Root) Merritt, all living in Granbury, Texas. She is also survived by 6 grandkids, 14 great grandkids, and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

The funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Monday, May 22, 2023, at the Action Methodist Church in Acton, Texas. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am on that same day. Interment will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at the Flomot Community Cemetery in Flomot, Texas.
