Virgie May Hammons, 81, of Omaha, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 20, 2025, Grand South Assisted Living in Dothan, Alabama, surrounded by her family.
She was born on May 7, 1944, in Omaha, to Bertie Lee and Elva Gladys Burton Blevins. On December 30, 1961, Virgie married the love of her life, David Carroll Hammons. Together they built a home, raised a family, and created a legacy rooted in faith, hard work, and love. A devoted member of First Baptist Church of Alpena, Virgie found great joy in teaching Sunday school and sharing her faith. She had a deep love for gardening, animals, and the outdoors, and nothing brought her more joy than time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Virgie grew up on a farm along Long Creek in Omaha, where she learned the value of family and responsibility from a young age, helping raise her younger brothers while her mother battled illness. She often spoke fondly of those times, never with regret, but with gratitude for the closeness it brought their family. She was a proud graduate of Omaha Schools and was known as a talented basketball player.
Throughout her life, she worked in various roles—librarian, healthcare administration, and retail—but her greatest role was as a wife, mother, and homemaker. She supported David faithfully through his railroad career, and in retirement, the two enjoyed life on Tower Road in the home they built together. When life grew heavy, David would take her on drives through “The Loop”—the scenic backroads past her childhood home. As they traveled the old roads along Long Creek, she would tell stories about the people and places that shaped her youth. Those rides brought her peace and reminded her of the deep roots she cherished. One of her favorite sayings, born out of hardship and faith, has become a foundation for her family: “When you ain’t got much, you just do the best you can and leave it in God’s hands.” That simple wisdom, spoken with humility and grace, is part of the legacy she leaves behind. Virgie’s presence—steady, gentle, and strong—will be missed beyond words. But her influence will continue in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and the generations yet to come. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband David, and her two brothers, Carl Dean Blevins and Kenneth Earl Blevins.
She is survived by her sons, David Carroll Hammons Jr. and wife, Jonel, of Paola, Kansas and John Alan Hammons and wife, Denise, of Dothan, Alabama; her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Sarah Jonel White-Hamilton (Andrew) of Baldwin City, Kansas, Elizabeth Anne Campbell (Adam) of Trimble, Missouri, and Nathan Patrick Hammons of Dothan, Alabama; she was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Christopher, Caleb, Seth, Asher, Thomas, and Charlotte Campbell, and David, Daniel, and Audrey White-Hamilton; her brother, John Wesley Blevins and wife, Mary, of Omaha; and Virgie is also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and a host of cousins and dear friends.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday July 29, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Alpena, with Pastor Nick Scarbough officiating. Burial will be in Alpena Cemetery under the direction of Holt Memorial Chapel.
Pallbearers will be David Hammons Jr., John Hammons, Nathan Hammons, Andrew White-Hamilton, Adam Campbell, and Asher Campbell. Honorary Pallbearers will be John Blevins, Bob Cook, and Roy Lynn Sisco.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 28th, at the funeral home.
