Ruth Levy

Ruth Levy passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2024. She was 94.

Ruth was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 16, 1929, as an only child to Sarah (Gussie) and Isadore Schulman.

Ruth graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School as valedictorian. She started New York University at the ripe old age of 16, receiving her bachelor’s degree in physical therapy. In 1949, she married her beloved husband, Julian Levy, also a physical therapist, who she met in a biology class at NYU.

Ruth began her physical therapy career during the height of the polio epidemic of the 1950s, working at a children’s hospital in New York City. Her distinguished career continued at LaGuardia Hospital in Forest Hills, New York and eventually concluded her full-time career as director of physical therapy at Syosset Community Hospital. Ruth continued her career part-time, well into her 80s, teaching home health aides across the New York City area. Always wanting to challenge herself, she would drive from central New Jersey to The Bronx and Brooklyn several times monthly, a 100–110-mile round trip.

Not only did Ruth have a distinguished career in physical therapy, but she also gave back to her Plainsboro “family” touching many lives. Ruth had served on the Plainsboro Township Human Relations Council, as a Docent at the Plainsboro Historical Society, and as a coordinator of several community events, including the Embroiders’ Guild.

“Live, Laugh, Love” was the mantra of Grandma Ruth (“Who Tells the Truth”), putting smiles on the faces of all who knew her.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Julian, and is survived by her two children, Kurt and Ilse, and three grandchildren, Joshua, Ethan, and Sara.
