Robert Earl Broom, known affectionately as Bob to his friends and family, left this world on a gentle note after a relatively short illness, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family in Denver, Colorado. Born on December 4th, 1937, in Decatur, Illinois, Bob’s early years in rural Forsyth, Illinois, laid the foundation for a life marked by dedication, service, and enduring optimism.
Bob’s academic pursuits led him to earn a bachelor’s degree in economics and accounting from Millikin University, followed by an MBA from the University of Denver. These accomplishments set the course for a distinguished career in public service and finance, reflecting his commitment to community and fiscal responsibility.
Beginning his career at the City of Decatur, Bob’s dedication to public service quickly became evident. He served with distinction as the finance director for the cities of Ocala, FL, and Aurora, CO, before ascending to the role of city manager of Aurora. His expertise and leadership were further recognized when he transitioned into a successful career as an investment banker. However, it was not the end of his public service journey. At the age of 65, Bob embarked on a new chapter as an elected official, serving on the Aurora City Council for three terms and then dedicating two terms to the Regional Transportation District Board of Directors. His wisdom and kind-hearted nature made him a respected figure in every role he embraced.
Bob’s life was not solely defined by his professional endeavors. He shared a profound love of travel with his beloved wife of 63 years, Ruthie Broom. Together, they traversed the globe exploring many countries across 6 continents. A highlight of their adventures was an unforgettable African safari filled with thrilling wildlife encounters and the enchanting sounds of nature that resonated through their tent at night. Bob often reminisced about these travels, his stories imbued with the same optimism and joy he carried through life.
A true sports enthusiast, Bob’s passion for the Denver Broncos was unwavering. As a 50-year season ticket holder, he relished every game, celebrating each victory with the same vigor as if it were the team’s first. His attendance at two Broncos Super Bowls, one culminating in a triumphant win, remained among his most cherished memories.
Bob was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church for over 50 years and volunteered often through the Rotary Club. He rang the bell for the Salvation Army every Christmas season into his mid-80s.
Bob’s kind spirit, his optimism in the face of challenges, and his wise counsel will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his brothers Albert and David, and his dear grandson Eric Robert Walker. His legacy continues through his devoted wife, Ruthie, his daughters Leesa and Laura (Rick), and the countless lives he touched with his generosity and warmth.
Robert Earl Broom’s life was a testament to the impact one individual can have on their community and the world at large. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love, service, and the enduring belief in the goodness of people. Bob’s memory will forever be a beacon of kindness and wisdom, guiding those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
A private graveside service was held at Fairmount Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to the Spirit of Aurora fund.
