Richard Walter Emmert

Born to Walter and Muriel, Richard Walter Emmert was the oldest of five children. Raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Richard met his wife Barbara through a mutual friend at the University of Cincinnati US Army ROTC program. Married on Christmas Eve, 1959, Richard was commissioned into the United States Army in 1960, serving for over twenty years in artillery and air defense units before retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Service stations included Fort Sill, Fort Bragg, Fort Shafter, Fort Bliss, various German assignments, and two tours in Vietnam as an editor for the Observer and Stars and Stripes. He was wounded in a Vietcong attack in 1964 and received the Purple Heart. While in the service, Richard graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth and earned his master’s degree in industrial engineering at The Ohio State University. Upon his retirement from the US Army, Richard worked for Allison Transmission in Indianapolis, Indiana. Richard possessed a lifelong interest in American military history and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Richard is survived by his wife Barbara, daughters Phyllis and Kathy, sons James and John, and fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10am -11am Tuesday, December 9th, 2025, at Wiley Funeral Home Chapel in Granbury, one hour prior to services.
Funeral Services will be held at 11am. on Tuesday, December 9th, 2025, in Wiley Funeral Home Chapel in Granbury. Committal services with military honors will follow at Acton Cemetery in Granbury.
