Richard “Dick” Joseph Steven, born December 23, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan, passed away peacefully in Hendersonville, North Carolina, on August 31, 2025, at the age of 92. Dick’s life was a testament to dedication, service, and the pursuit of joy. He began his journey in Detroit, graduating from Cass Tech High School and then Walsh Institute.
Dick’s early years were marked by distinguished service in the United States Army to his country as a Corporal in the 9th Infantry during the Korean War. His bravery and leadership earned him commendations, including the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. In addition to his duties, he contributed to troop morale as a liaison and military escort with the USO Camp Show.
After the war, Dick embarked on a successful career in human resources with General Motors. His professionalism and kindness left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends. Upon retiring in 1985 and moving to Arden, North Carolina, Dick and his beloved wife, Ardath, sought the tranquility of beautiful mountains and landscapes. Together, they embraced retirement with open arms, forming cherished bonds with friends who became family.
An avid golfer and passionate sports enthusiast, Dick found great joy in the fairways and in cheering on his favorite teams. He was frequently seen attending local playhouses, enjoying the vibrant cultural tapestry of the arts.
Preceded in death by his loving parents, Jack and Ann Steven; his cherished wife, Ardath; and his brother, Robert Steven, Dick leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth. He is survived by his devoted daughters, Dana (Steve) Eckhout of Macomb, Michigan, and Kimberly (Ed) Leon of Cary, North Carolina; his sons, Matthew Steven of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, and Kenneth Kirby of Bancroft, Michigan. His grandchildren, Reed Eckhout, Zachary Eckhout, Max Eckhout, Jocelyn Kirby, Eric Kirby, Kenneth Kirby, Jr., Christopher Leon, Robert Leon, and Jonathan Leon; along with his great-grandchildren, Emerson Eckhout, Easton Eckhout, Avery Eckhout, Abigail Eckhout, Azara Leon, Lilia Leon, Nora Leon, Kyan Kirby, Luna Kirby-Camaj, Weston Kirby, and Camden Bicknell, will continue to carry forward his legacy of kindness and integrity.
Also surviving are his sister, Phyllis (Hank) Hoskins of St. Clair, Michigan; brother, Bob (Norma) Steven of Harsens Island, Michigan; nieces, Kimberly (Mark) Bush, and Lynn (Chris) Snarski; and nephews, Bradley (Beth) Steven, and Jason (Melissa) Steven.

Dick’s life was a remarkable journey marked by selfless service, unwavering familial devotion, and a zest for all that life offered. His legacy will be treasured by the many who knew and loved him.
