Merle McHardy – Farrell
With hearts full of love, we celebrate the life of Merle McHardy-Farrell, a woman of strength, grace, and unwavering determination. Born on February 7, 1943, in the village of Guaico Tamana, Trinidad and Tobago, Merle was 1 of 13 children of the late Eugenia Meloney and George McHardy. On July 11, 2025, she departed this world, leaving behind a legacy that spans generations.
Merle was the beloved sister of Mavis and Martin and is now reunited with her predeceased siblings: brothers Ainsley, Hamilton, St. Hill, Valentine, and Laurie; and sisters Catherine, Margaret, Olive, Bertie, and Venissa. The McHardy family bond was strong and enduring-a foundation Merle carried with her throughout her life.
She immigrated to the United States in the late 1960s and made Brooklyn, NY her home for many years before relocating to Port St. Lucie, Florida, in 1999 with her late husband, Mervyn Farrell. Their relationship spanned nearly 50 years until his passing in 2021. Merle worked with dedication in nursing and later in retail before retiring. She was remarkably resourceful and financially savvy, creating the life she envisioned and ensuring a strong foundation for her children and grandchildren.
A woman of faith, resilience, and wisdom, Merle met life’s challenges with quiet courage and a deep belief in caring for others. Every conversation with her guaranteed a good laugh thanks to her quick and creative wit, and her legendary Trini one-liners filled with wisdom and humor. She especially loved Christmas, setting the mood with beautiful decorations, parang music playing in the background, and dancing joyfully with her grandchildren.
Merle was also known for her exceptional skills in the kitchen, mastering the flavors of Trinidadian cuisine with what many described as “the sweetest hand.” Her cassava pone, coconut bake, and black cake were unforgettable, drawing loved ones to the table and often requested for every celebration. She was equally gifted with a needle and thread-an accomplished seamstress whose impeccable style shone through in both her wardrobe and home.Her love of travel and sense of adventure took her far and wide, though one of her favorite pastimes was gathering with friends at the casino, where she was known for both her good luck and great company.
Merle lives on through her children: Curtis (Crystal) McHardy, Darren (Kathy) McHardy, and Janelle Farrell; and her adored grandchildren: Naima, Saada, and Nkosi McHardy; Joshua and Jonathon McHardy; and Harmony, Serenity, and Trinity Williams-all based in Atlanta. Each of them carries her bold spirit, fierce independence, and-if they’re lucky-a touch of her legendary seasoning skills. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory. Merle touched the lives of many-not just through her hospitality and talents, but through her generous spirit and her commitment to helping others find their footing after migrating to the U.S. Her life was a testament to the power of perseverance, kindness, and faith. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her and lovingly remembered for the joy she brought, the love she shared, and the lasting legacy she leaves behind.
