Marie C. (McGrath) Hoy, of Catonsville, MD, passed away on Monday, 19 May 2025, in Catonsville, Maryland, at age 92. She was born on 27 July 1932, to the late James G. and Catherine M. (Redington) McGrath. She married the late Edward D. Hoy on 25 May 1957; Ed passed away on 22 May 2024.
Marie attended grade and high school at St. Gregory’s Catholic school in Dorchester, MA, and graduated with a B.S. in Biology from Emmauel College in Boston in 1953 where she was the manager for the women’s basketball team. After graduation, Marie went to work for the National Security Agency, first in Arlington, VA, and then at Fort Meade, MD. She left the Agency in 1960 to raise her children and later to care for her mother before rejoining the Agency from 1982 to 1989. Through Ed’s work, the family spent three years in Stuttgart, Germany, and travelled extensively throughout Europe. During this time, Marie also attended a French cooking school in Dieppe, France.
In the late 1960s/early 1970s, Marie ran the concession stand for the Howard County Youth Program at Kiwanis Park, ensuring that candy and snowballs were always available for baseball and softball games. She also published the Program newsletter for several years.
After moving to Howard County in 1963, Marie was a long-time parishioner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Ellicott City, MD, where she sang in the choir for over 30 years; she also volunteered with Ed helping the parish priest for many years. For her devotion, she received the Baltimore Archdiocese Medal of Honor in 2003. After moving to Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, MD, she continued to sing in the choir at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Chapel for several years.
Marie is survived by her son Dennis (Nancy) Hoy of Martinsville, VA, and daughter Cathy (Brian) Donchez of Ellicott City, MD; grandchildren Colleen Hoy of Chevy Chase, MD, and Nashville, TN, and James Hoy of Seattle, WA. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by grandson Kevin Donchez.
A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Chapel, 711 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, MD on Monday, 2 June 2025. Visitation will begin at 10 am in the church followed by Mass at 11 am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Marie’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
