Maria De Ocampo

Maria Lourdes De Ocampo, nee Ebreo, 67, of Glenview passed away on May 29th. Beloved wife of the late Bezaleel De Ocampo. Loving mother to Mariebhez (Jeffrey) Troksa and James Florian De Ocampo. Dear sister of Edgardo (Minerva) Ebreo, Jane (Walter) Szsczebywlok, the late Emmanuel (Janet) Ebreo, Radito Jose (Rose Novenario) Ebreo and Randall (the late Melba) Ebreo. Cherished niece of many, especially Pilar Ebreo. Maria will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends – and especially by her Boston Terrier, Batman.

Maria was a dedicated and compassionate Clinical Nurse Specialist, Registered Nurse, and Certified Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse. She had a career spanning more than four decades and devoted her life to the advancement of patient care. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1979, she went on to achieve board certification as a Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse in 2000. Her unwavering commitment to patient advocacy and clinical excellence set a standard for colleagues and mentees alike.

In her most recent role at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Illinois, Maria served as an Advanced Practice Nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist from 2018 until her passing. Prior to that, she held the same role at the University of Chicago Medicine for over a decade, working through the Center for Nursing Professional Practice and Research.

Her influence extended beyond the bedside. A longstanding member of the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society since 2000, Maria held several leadership positions within the Northern Illinois Affiliate, including President (2010-2014), Committee Chair of Professional Education (2008-2009), and Secretary (2006, 2008). She also contributed significantly to the field through scholarly work, publishing a clinical article on peristomal varices in the Journal of Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing in 2013 and serving as a reviewer for academic journals.

Her expertise was widely respected, not only in clinical settings but also in the legal realm, where she acted as an expert clinical witness and reviewer in complex wound and ostomy cases.

Maria’s legacy lives on in the countless patients she cared for, the nurses she mentored, and the clinical standards she helped shape. Her compassionate spirit, clinical acumen, and tireless service will be deeply missed by her colleagues, patients, friends, and family.
