Margaret A. Hubbard Schlup, fondly known to friends as “Margo,” passed away on Friday, April 4, 2025, at the age of 85 with her son and daughter by her side. She was the epitome of grace and style, a forever student, beautiful hostess, servant of Christ, and had a magnetism you wanted to be around.
Margaret was born to LaVerne and Ruth Hubbard on December 14, 1939, in Watertown, South Dakota. In her early years, she was accomplished at whatever she tried. She was a good student, leader, Girl Scout, seamstress, and played the clarinet in the band! She also loved her summer days at nearby Lake Kampeska teaching swimming, camping and playing with brother, John, and other family members and friends at their cottage.
In high school, Margaret did a summer exchange program with American Field Service (AFS) to Heidelberg, Germany. Serving AFS and international travel would continue to be an integral part of her life. She attended Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, and received her B.A. in Speech Education. There, she was also a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She continued to serve Pi Phi as an alumna, not only holding various leadership roles but also being recognized with several national awards.
After college, Margaret wanted to teach English and Social Studies and was drawn to Denver Public Schools in 1963. She accepted a position at Grant Junior High where she also met colleague and love of her life, Don. They were married August 18, 1963. They subsequently moved to Warrensburg, MO so Don could earn his master’s in biology. While there, Margaret taught school at Whitman AFB. After returning to Denver, she taught at Byers Jr. High for four years. She left teaching to raise her daughter, Lisa, and son, David. The rest of her life she dedicated to being an extraordinary mom, homemaker, Nana to grandchildren Jacob and Abby, and a servant to her community.
Margaret had an exceptional knack for hosting events, gardening, and was very artistic and creative. She could draw, excel at any arts and craft project, was musical and could whip out a poem for any occasion! She loved teaching her family new things, spending time at the family cabin, attending her Great Books Group, Investment Club and Pi Phi Bridge Group, Community Bible Study, and cheering for the Broncos. Especially in later years, she and Don found much joy in treating friends and family to Nuggets games.
Margaret’s volunteer work included involvement in all her kids’ schools, St. Andrew UMC, work teams to Mexico, youth group leader, Girl Scout leader, Les Cygnettes, The Bal de Ballet, Fine Arts Foundation, Denver Area Panhellenic, Denver Rotary, Project C.U.R.E., Colorado Christian University and its Centennial Institute, and being a deacon at Cherry Creek Presbyterian with Don. She also sold clothing for CMcE Ltd., a women’s apparel company, for over a decade and was a nationally recognized saleswoman.
Margaret is survived by: her son, David, daughter, Lisa, son-in-law Doug Reese and grandchildren Jacob (Caresse) and Abby; her brother, John (Gayle) Hubbard; cousins Bob (Joanne) Hubbard and Jean (Craig Evans) and their families; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Hilton and Fran Schlup, nephew Brian (Julie) Schlup and niece Becky (Jesse Olson) and her two children, Carson and Carlee.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Margaret (Margo) Schlup’s honor to the following two organizations: Project C.U.R.E. and Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University. Giving information is below.
Project C.U.R.E’s international headquarters is here in Denver. They deliver supplies and services and most notably through their cargo containers, life-saving medical equipment to people world-wide experiencing poverty, disasters and violence. Margo enjoyed volunteering at their distribution site, and she and Don through the family’s business, ScienTurfic Sod Farms, supported (and continue to support) one of their annual fundraisers. Centennial Institute. Margaret and her late husband, Don, were strong supporters of Colorado Christian University and the work being done there through the Centennial Institute. Margaret was a member of Centennial Institute’s Business Council and was a consistent attendee of the Western Conservative Summit. She and Don were strong believers in Christ-centered, conservative education, and she found great joy in seeing that mission lived out through the university’s programs. Gifts in Margo’s memory may be made online at https://centennial.ccu.edu/donate/ or mailed to the address below. Please note “Centennial Institute Fund – In Memory of Margaret Schlup” with your gift.
