Kenneth Schmidt

Kenneth Charles Schmidt, age 77 of Clarence, passed away peacefully on Monday June 2, 2025, surrounded by loved ones at his home. Ken has been cremated according to his wishes, and there will be a Celebration of Life held at the Clarence Park Pavilion on Friday, June 6 from 4-8 p.m. Burial will be in the Red Oak Cemetery at a later date.

Ken was born on June 18, 1947 in Cedar Rapids to Elmer and Alice (Licht) Schmidt. He married Sherry Odeen at the Red Oak Church on November 18, 1972.

Ken was baptized & confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lowden and graduated from Lowden High School in 1965. He worked for the Clarence Coop/River Valley Coop for 33 years as well as Tri-States Mill & Elevator for 4 years. Ken was a charter member of the Clarence Jaycees, served as district director and state chaplain, and was on the Cedar County Fair Board for 20 years.

Ken was a man of many passions. He found joy and peace in the great outdoors, whether he was camping under the stars, casting a line on a quiet lake, or spending an afternoon at the bowling alley with friends. Ken also enjoyed playing softball in his younger years, and watching dirt track racing.

But above all, Ken’s greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren. There was nothing he loved more than watching them play sports — from the sidelines, he was their loudest cheerleader and most devoted fan. His pride in their accomplishments, big or small, was endless, and he treasured every moment spent with them.

Ken is survived by his wife Sherry of Clarence; children Matt (Chyan) Schmidt of North Liberty, Mindy Praught (Schmidt) of Clarence, and Mike (Loretta Stewart) of Tipton; grandchildren Nicole Schmidt, Blake (Morgan) Moser, Bryor Schmidt, Pacino Young, Skyler Schmidt, Jordyn Schmidt, Kennedy Stewart, and Peyton (Austin) Stewart; great grandchildren Cooper Schmidt, Maddex Easley, Kaiden Cook, and Kreighton Cook; sister Kathy (Ronald) Robinson of Clarence; and many nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Karen Keith; and brother-in-law David Keith.
