Joseph Merrill Hensley, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025, in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Born on October 31, 1944, in Banardsville, North Carolina, he was 80 years old at the time of his passing.
Joseph was a man of many talents and interests. After a fulfilling career, he retired from Meritor, formerly known as Rockwell, where he was a respected and dedicated employee. His passion for craftsmanship was evident in his personal pursuits. He meticulously rebuilt a 1930 Model A car and spent countless hours in his workshop, crafting beautiful pens and building five elegant grandfather clocks. Joseph also cherished his time as a beekeeper, finding solace and joy in this peaceful endeavor.
A man of deep faith, Joseph was of the Baptist faith, where he found community and spiritual fulfillment. His love for classic cars led him to become an active member of an Antique Car Club, where he shared his enthusiasm with fellow enthusiasts.
Joseph was preceded in death by his father, William Guy Hensley; his mother, Mary Beatrice Allen; his brothers, William Bill Hensley and Michael Van Andrea Hensley; and his sister, Garnet Sue Dillingham.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Joyce Hensley, whose unwavering support and love were constant in his life. He leaves behind his cherished daughter, Deirdre Merrelle Hensley Mallard, and his grandchildren, Daniel Mallard (Adrian) and Elizabeth Mathis (Brandon). His great-grandchildren, Emma Mallard, Easton Mallard, Mason Mallard, Ryland Mathis, and Romi Mathis, were a source of immense pride and joy.
Joseph is also survived by his sisters, Latona Wetzler of Leicester, NC, and Elva Towe (Don) of Boiling Springs, SC; his brothers, Beaty Hensley of Banardsville, NC, and Sidney Hensley (Sheila) of Fletcher, NC. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and special friends who brought richness and happiness to his life.
A graveside service will be held at one o’clock on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Patty’s Chapel Cemetery, with Pastor Herbert Schlenker officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate the life of a remarkable man whose legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Joseph Merrill Hensley will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered for his warmth, kindness, and the enduring love he gave to his family and friends.
