Joan Sands

It is with deep sorrow that we announce Joan B. Sands, 92, surrounded by her family, has gone home to be with the Lord on May 11, 2025 at Hudson Valley Hospice in Hyde Park, NY.
Born to parents Thomas Callahan and Brennetta Medford in Manhattan, NYC on December 9, 1932. Joan grew up in New York before moving to Jacksonville, Florida.
Joan met the love of her life Herman C. Dupree and they were married in 1951 and had five beautiful children until his death in 1972. Joan worked for New York Bell Telephone in NY and Southern Bell Telephone in FL.
Joan received a second chance at love when she married Carl E. Sands on January 6, 1978 and they were married for 24 years until his death in 2002.
She was predeceased by her husbands Herman C. Dupree of NY and Carl E. Sands of FL as well as her sister Arlene Hudgins of FL and brother Ronald Callahan of PA.
Joan was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Joan is survived by her five children, Denise (Rob) Deyo of Green Valley AZ, Michelle (Stephen) Puletz of Wappingers Falls, NY, Celeste Nichols of Gloucester, VA, Richard Dupree of Scottsdale, AZ, and Corinne (Thomas) Slaughter of Hyde Park, NY.
Joan adored her 12 grandchildren and 17 and a half great grandchildren and is survived by her many great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She loved to play cards and board games and on occasion was known to cheat at Scrabble. Joan relished her time at the Senior Drop In Center in Hyde Park, NY playing mahjong with her friends. Joan enjoyed watching Turner Classic Movies and Jeopardy! in her free time and rejoiced in singing in her church choirs. She loved reading, painting, and spending time with her cats. Joan was a member of Hyde Park Baptist Church in Hyde Park, NY.
She touched many lives with her kind generosity and thoughtfulness.
Interment will be privately held in Jacksonville, FL.
