Herman Carter Reese, Jr., affectionately known as “June” to everyone, went to his heavenly home of rest on Monday morning, October 6, 2025, at his residence in Petersburg, Virginia.
June was born October 20, 1951, to the late Herman C. Reese Sr. and Floresa M. Reese. He was preceded in death by his sister, Anne Saunders and brother, Rickey Reese, his nephews-James Kevin Hill and Jarvis Lee Hill.
June was baptized at an early age at First Baptist Church, Disputanta, VA and was a lifetime member. He supported and served his community and church in a quiet but mighty way.
June attended Prince George County Public Schools, Prince George, VA and joined the U.S. Army in 1972 serving to 1976. He went on to be a long-time employee and retired from Hercules, Hopewell, VA (now Aqualon Division) after 38 dedicated years.
June’s hobbies included Baseball, Gardening, Lawncare, and helping others. He mowed lawns at a reduced cost or free for seniors and others who could not afford to pay.
June loved baseball – His many years of Baseball included playing with Disputanta A’s, then he played with the Blue Sox, went on to manage the Hopewell Vikings, later he coached the Blue Sox for many years. He also served as president of Virginia Central League Empires for 4 years.
June couldn’t say no—He was dedicated to his family, community and friends. Giving was in his soul! He was always cooking, working on cars, driving others to appointments, house maintenance, working on equipment, loaning and giving money to those in need and much more. His family was everything. His grandchildren, nieces and nephews had a ‘super special’ place in his heart.
June leaves to cherish his memory, his precious, loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Valanda Reese; one daughter, Wgnette (Terry) Kelly of Myrtle Beach, SC; two sons, Alonzo and Troy Reese of Petersburg, VA; and a bonus daughter, Angela Williams of Prince George, VA; six grandchildren, Terrence and Terrell Kelly of Savannah, GA, Tiffanie Kelly of Myrtle Beach, SC, Zaquaze Reese of Petersburg, VA, Imani Reese of Dinwiddie, VA and Maleah Reese of Chesterfield, VA; and bonus grandson, Ozias Williams of Middlesboro, KY; two sisters, Mattie Morgan and Donna Williams of Disputanta, VA; brother-in-law, Wilbert (Mary) Allen of Petersburg, VA; six sisters-in-law, Shirley Allen (Joseph) of Dinwiddie, VA, Caroline Thomas of Patterson, NJ, Eva Fields (Alexander) of Disputanta, VA, Inez Thomas of Waverly, VA, Mary Allen of Dinwiddie, VA and Doris Allen of Petersburg, VA; two aunts, Lorraine Reese of Cincinnati, OH and Alice Taylor of Hopewell, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Among those are devoted nieces, Jean Hill-Atkins, Desiree Jones, and Kimberly Reese; devoted cousins, Josephine Epps and the late William Reese, III.
June’s list of friends is endless but a few devoted include: Renzellus Bey (Poo), Keith Brown (Mooch), Tracy Butts, Bill Crockett, Herbert Dennis, Alvin Drumgoole, Cory Hamlin, Junie Jones, Terry Jones, Wesley Lambert, Dale Moore (Mo), Ollie Reddick, Trussaine Silver and William Washington.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church, 10209 County Dr., Disputanta, VA with Rev. Dr. Antonio A. Tucker, Sr., officiating and Apostle Joycelyn Rhone, eulogizing. Interment will follow at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Rd., Suffolk, VA. Public Viewing will be Thursday, October 9, 2025 from 12:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. with Family Visitation from 6:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
