1940 – 2025

Thompson – Elmer H. Preston, 84, of Old Route 12, died Wednesday evening at Day Kimball Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of Carol J, (Veraneault) Preston. Born in Killingly, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Ethel (Mason) Preston.

Mr. Preston was a Vietnam War veteran serving with the United States Army and was honorably discharged on October 4, 1965, at Ft. Hamilton, New York.

Mr. Preston worked for over 30 years for the Town of Thompson highway department.

He was a member of the VFW Post 10088 in Quinebaug serving as their Commander, State of Connecticut Department Chaplain for the VFW, and District Chaplain for the VFW. Elmer was also a member of the American Legion Post 67 serving as their chaplain. He enjoys going for walks and riding his bicycle.

Elmer is survived by his wife Carol J. Preston of Thompson; his children, Keith Preston, wife Valida of Clarkson, KY, Jeffrey Preston, wife Cynthia of Woodstock, and Kim Lumbra, husband Ken of Niota, TN; his grandchildren, Eric, Megan, Keifer, and Kolbi, and Adam, wife Danielle Preston, Jocelyn Fletcher, husband Brad, Laura Richard, husband Nicholas, and Kayla Trickel; his great grandchildren, Dorian, Aiden, Zoe, Logan, Keegan, Kayleigh, Finley, Nolan, Amelia, Charolette, and Hudson, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Raymond, Harry, Alfred, John, Maurice, Richard, and Alice Preston.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Elmer’s family from 10:00AM to 12:00PM on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, in the Valade Funeral Home, 23 Main Street, North Grosvenordale, CT. Burial will follow in West Thompson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Elmer’s memory may be made to the VFW National Home, 3573 S.
