Dolores Grosco, a lifelong resident of West Frankfort, Illinois, passed away on Friday May 17, 2025, at 11:16pm at Parkway Manor, Marion.
Dolores was born June 3, 1932, in West Frankfort, the youngest of six children born to John A. and Mary (Kerkes) Grosco. Throughout her lifetime, she was a devoted and active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in West Frankfort.
Dolores graduated from St. John’s Catholic school and Frankfort Community High School, class of 1950. She received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, majoring in Business Education.
Dolores began her teaching career in 1954 at Benton Consolidated High School in Benton, Illinois, teaching typing, record keeping, and English. She taught for two years there and continued her teaching career at Frankfort Community High School in West Frankfort, Illinois. At FCHS she taught mainly shorthand and typing classes. She also served as Chairperson of the Business Department, and Dean of girls, and then as Dean of students for many years. She supervised numerous student teachers in Business Education and taught evening adult typing noncredit classes for John A. Logan College and FCHS. She retired in 1992 after 38 years of teaching.
In 1974, Dolores was recognized for her teaching ability by the Southern Illinois Business Association and the SIU department of Secondary Education, and she received the Southern Illinois Business Teacher of the year award. She was an emeritus member of Delta Pi Epsilon, an honorary business education organization, a 50-plus-year member of Delta Theta Tau Sorority in West Frankfort, and a member of the Franklin County retired teachers’ association and the Illinois retired teachers’ association. She enjoyed reading, watching television, record keeping, and working wonderword. Dolores was preceded in death by her parents (John A Grosco and Mary K. Grosco), two brothers (John E. Grosco and George Grosco); three sisters (Sr. MaryAnn Grosco, ASC, Irene T. Grosco and Margaret K. Grosco), numerous cousins and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Eusebius Mbidoaka officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic cemetery, West Frankfort. Visitation will be from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday May 24, 2025 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Memorials may be made St. John’s Catholic School.
