Carolyn Zuber – Strong Coffee, Strong Opinions, and even Stronger Heart
Carol Zuber of Fort Pierre, South Dakota, finally got her wish on April 28, 2025 – Heaven called, and she answered, probably with a lit cigarette in one hand and a mug of black coffee in the other. She was 78, and had been threatening to “head up there and stir things up” for some time now.
Carol loved her family fiercely, her neighbors dearly, and a good political debate – especially if it involved Fox News or her unapologetic admiration for Donald Trump. She was the kind of woman who’d offer you a seat at the kitchen table, light up a smoke, and chat for hours, whether you came to borrow sugar or just needed a sounding board. Carol was a great listener, and always offered the most honest advice – you always knew what you were getting with her.
In her younger years, Carol worked at St. Mary’s Hospital. It’s always been said that her and a few others “ran the show”. The stories people share highlight the type of person Carol was her entire life. In the past 15 years of her life, Carol opened her heart and home even wider by becoming a foster parent.
She is survived by her son, Farley (Holly) Zuber, five grand kids: Forrest (Jess) Zuber, Levi Zuber and Sydney Zuber, Dawson (Aaron) Huber, Dillon (Jessika) Kirkpatrick, her great-grand kids: Leo Zuber, Austyn and Knox Huber and Hayes Kirkpatrick, whom she adored beyond measure. She is also survived by her brother Jim Stover, sisters-in-law Lori O’Daniel, Heidi O’Daniel and Virginia O’Daniel as well as one brother-in-law Red Bouchie. She was deeply thankful for the close care and love of the Huebner family. Carol had a ton of nieces and nephews that she also loved so much. Carol shared many years and great times with her lifelong friend Steve Gadd.
She was predeceased by her beloved daughter Charlotte – whom she missed every single day – as well as siblings: Judie Bouchie, Sharon Holley, Barbara Hayes, Allen O’Daniel, Jerry O’Daniel, Rocky O’Daniel and Larry O’Daniel, and her niece Sunni Holley. As one of the last of her generation, she was more than ready to reunite with her people on the other side, and we’re pretty sure Heaven’s neighborhood just got a who lot livelier.
Raise a mug, light one up, and tell someone you love them. Carol wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
