Barbara Young

Barbara Young passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at the age of 95. She was born in Hong Kong, China, on November 4, 1929, and is survived by her sons Sam and Kenneth, and daughter Mimi; daughter-in-laws Yvonne and Mariko, grandson Justin and his wife Emma; sister Anna Lai and brother Daniel Leong.

Barbara and her family emigrated to the United States in 1969, where she and her late husband John made a home for themselves and their children in San Francisco’s Sunset District. She spent nearly two decades working for the San Francisco Unified School District as a kitchen assistant. Never one to be idle, she kept herself busy after retirement, running errands for others, cooking everyone’s favorites, and endearing herself to her sons’ and daughter’s colleagues and friends with surprise food deliveries.

In her later years, despite having been apprehensive around dogs most of her life, Barbara became a proud dog grandma to Violet, Rex, Nebula, and great-grandma to Cashew, going so far as to save meat from making soup to dole out as dog treats. Even as her health began declining and she became less mobile, Barbara could still play a mean game of mahjong and appreciate a great meal, even if she wasn’t the one doing the cooking anymore, and always enjoyed a bowl of ice cream…even in her final week.
