Peter Topping
- May 20, 2025

It is with deep love and heavy hearts that the family announce the peaceful passing of Peter Allan “Topper” Topping, age 59, at his home surrounded by family on May 16, 2025, in Sarnia, Ontario. Born on May 2, 1966, in St. Thomas, Ontario, Pete lived life to the fullest, had a great love for his family, friends and animals.
Loving husband of over 28 years to Shellie (Chivers); their children Tara (Hayden Mclean) and Brandon. Cherished Papa and best friend to grandchildren Lainey and Hudson Mclean. He is also survived by his mother Wendy Topping-Neely (Brian Neely) and the late Jim Topping (1994); siblings Mike, James (Jodi), and Bob (Liz). Son-in-law of Judy and the late Ernie “Toughy” Chivers (2021); brother-in-law to Jeff and Mike Chivers.
He held a special place in the hearts of many nieces and nephews with whom he shared a unique bond and relationship with. Pete always encouraged each one of their interest and talents by telling them often of how proud he was of them. He always wanted them to feel loved and valued. He created special relationships and will be lovingly remembered by aunts, uncles, cousins and other extended family members within both the Topping and Chivers family.
Pete had many great friendships; especially with his life-long best friend of over 50 years, Brian (Brenda) Dilling. His love for his friends made them family. He took interest in their children and their immediate family by creating a special friendship with all.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Pete was a loyal, hardworking employee of CSX Transportation for 35 years. As a locomotive engineer and conductor, he was known for his strong work ethic and mentored many. He will be missed by many past and present colleagues.
Pete’s affection and love for animals was evident throughout his life. He would ensure all animals were fed, especially the horses beside the railroad tracks. Pete is now reunited with many beloved pets, including Max, Molson and Oakley.
A special thank you to Dr. Qu, Dr. Tong and especially Dr. Crombeen for their diligent collaboration efforts to help Pete fight the good fight. Thank you also to the Palliative Care nurses at BWH for their compassion and kindness in Pete’s final days.
May Pete’s loyalty, humour, and generous spirit comfort those who knew him and continue to inspire kindness and connection among all whose lives he touched. A Visitation will be held on May 31, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with a Memorial Service to follow at 12:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1400 Murphy Rd.
