Celebrating the power of art as a universal language, families, employees and community members from the Carson City School District gathered into the Carson City Children’s Museum last Friday, June 13, to admire the artistic talents and creative voices of English Learner (EL) students at a final art exhibit and the conclusion of a special Summer Art Camp.
The camp, designed specifically for EL students, provided a supportive and inspiring environment where students could explore various art techniques, express themselves creatively and strengthen their language skills through hands-on activities.
The theme of the week-long art camp was ‘Wind, Wings and Water.’ All the artistic creations were centered around the theme, allowing the students to explore a variety of mediums, from painting and drawing to ceramics and mixed media. The camp provided a supportive and inspiring space for students to express themselves visually while building confidence and strengthening connections with peers and teachers.
Additionally, NV Energy granted the camp permission to paint a utility box outside of the museum. Before the utility box was painted, the students were able to visit the Nevada State Museum to sketch the bird exhibit and view the butterfly collections. After learning and reading about how they seem fragile but travel great distances, exhibiting extreme endurance, the mini mural the students created took the likeness of a monarch butterfly.
“Art has a unique way of bringing people together and giving every student a voice,” said Tanya Scott, Ph.D., and director of English Learner and Pre-K Programming for the Carson City School District. “Our English Learner students have shown us that creativity knows no language barriers. We are incredibly proud of what they accomplished this summer and look forward to them exploring more of their talents before we begin school again August 18.”
Teachers and program coordinators emphasized that beyond learning artistic techniques, students gained valuable language skills, cultural connections and self-confidence through collaborative art-making and presentations of their work.
The district thanks all the dedicated educators, the student volunteers, Mary Ann Gunter and the Carson City Children’s Museum, who made the Summer Art Camp and exhibit possible. Additional thanks to Carson City community partners Big Chicken, Chick-fil-A, FoodMaxx, Hacienda Market and Grill and the Pizza Factory for sponsoring student lunches throughout the week. The district looks forward to continuing programs that empower students to learn, grow and share their talents with the community.
