Arlene Taylor
- September 25, 2024

Arlene Gertrude Taylor, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother affectionately known as The Grani passed away peacefully September 23rd, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion to her family. Born on February 21, 1929, in Eupora, Mississippi, to Oazie (Daniels) Bays and James Duke Drain. Arlene was primarily raised by her strong and devoted grandmother, Celia Daniels, whom she affectionately referred to as her “Mama.” Celia’s influence shaped Arlene’s life, providing her with a deep well of wisdom and compassion that she would carry throughout her years.
At the age of 14, like many African Americans seeking better opportunities, Arlene relocated to Chicago, Illinois. She attended DuSable High School, and by the age of 17, with her mother’s blessing, she married the love of her life, Foster Taylor (deceased).
Arlene was a devoted employee of the United States Postal Service for 35 years, where her tireless dedication and integrity earned her multiple promotions, culminating in her retirement as an Accounting Clerk. She took great pride in her work and often impressed others with her remarkable knowledge of the city’s grid—if given cross streets, she could instantly recall the corresponding zip code and neighborhood. Her strong work ethic and resilience served as an inspiration to everyone who knew her.
Arlene became a member of Cosmopolitan Community Church in the early 1970s, actively participating in various church organizations and supporting the pastor in numerous events aimed at the betterment of the church. She was deeply involved and made it a priority to contribute whenever she could. Arlene took great pride in being a member and the former President of the February Club, ensuring that her children born in that month were also active participants. As a proud “Cosmolite,” she often spoke fondly of Rev. Henry O. Hardy, sharing her love and respect for him with everyone she encountered.
To the union of Arlene and Foster (proceeded in death) four children were born: Cheryl, Celia (Eugene), Faustina (deceased), and Robert. Arlene was a devoted mother and cherished her family above all else. She was blessed with 7 grandchildren: Veronica, Adunni, Marcus (Rhonda), Adam, Eric (Shanence), Adonis (LaRonda) and Rachael (Quincy), and 12 great-grandchildren: Lavon, Alex, Amber, Malik (Taylor), Nia, Adonis Jr. (Sydney), Mariah, Mohammed, Quinton, Mateen, Lauren, and Justin. She was also proud to welcome 7 great-great-grandchildren into the family: Taylor, Logan, Trinity, Jariah, AJ, Master, and Journi.
Arlene’s legacy is one of love, perseverance, and unwavering devotion to family. Her strength was a pillar for those who knew her, and her gentle spirit left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to be in her presence.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Debora “Ms. Jean” Walters and the entire Walters family, who were more than just neighbors for over 50 years they were true friends. Together, they shared countless heartfelt conversations and provided unwavering support through life’s most difficult moments, becoming each other’s pillars of strength. A special acknowledgment is extended to her former daughter-in-law, Pamela (Taylor) Dickerson, whom she affectionately described as sharing a relationship reminiscent of Naomi and Ruth. The family also offers their sincerest thanks to her home health aides and caregivers, Valerie P. Coleman, Annie Bolton and Charlene Montgomery, whose care was infused with love and tenderness, treating her as if she were one of their own.
She will be deeply missed but forever remembered by her family, friends, and all who loved her. Arlene Gertrude Taylor’s life was a testament to the power of family, faith, and resilience.
May she rest in eternal peace.
