Lynwood Beach died on September 26, 2024, in the Hospice unit of Martinsburg VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, West Virginia. Born September 18th, 1932, in Harrisonburg, Virginia to Ossie and Addie (Shifflett) Beach. He had 9 siblings.
He proudly joined the Army in 1949 and completed Basic Training at Ft. Jackson, SC. He was transferred to Ft. Bliss, TX, where he trained in RADAR operation. During his duty at Ft. Bliss, he and his platoon fought forest fires in New Mexico, where they found a badly burned bear cub. It was turned over to authorities and ended up the first embodiment of “Smokey the Bear”, who lived the rest of his life at the National Zoo. His first duty station was to be Japan. Shortly after his arrival, he was assigned to Task Force Smith, the first American forces into Korea in 1950. He fought in 5 campaigns shortly after his arrival. After Korea, he was assigned to West Point until his discharge in 1953. This is where he met and married Beverly Rysavy. They had three children together. Between 1966 and 1983 he and his wife owned and operated Bev and Lynn’s Restaurant in Ft. Montgomery, NY. Beverly passed away in 1990.
He is survived by his brother John (Jane) of Harrisonburg VA, his son Robert (Catherine) of Berlin MD, daughter Cathryn and son Joseph of Highland Falls NY, grandchildren: Whitney, Daniel, Katherine, and Joey (Lon); great-grandchildren: Eli, Annabelle, and Jackson. He is also survived by countless nieces and nephews.
A burial ceremony with military honors will begin at 11:00 a.m. on November 14, 2024, at Peacedale Cemetery, Highland Falls, NY.
