Arlene Couch

Arlene M. Couch, 70, of Abingdon, VA passed away on Monday, May 19, 2025 at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, VA. She was born in Indiana on May 31, 1954, a daughter of the late Robert and Tressie Smethers Martin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Tonya Couch; a niece, Dawn Myers; and her loving dog, Ace Boy.

She had lived in Kentucky for many years before moving to Washington County, VA seven years ago.

Arlene is survived by three children, Teresa Smethers Atkins, Elizabeth “Nicki” Couch, and J.R. Bumgardner; 10 grandchildren, Tori Chapman, Destiny Couch, Jazmin Couch, Shannon Gordon, Kali Scruggs, Kayne Scruggs, Decurtis Taylor, Jeweleena Taylor, Kendra Gibson, and Jacob Atkins; three great grandchildren, Mia Blevins, Joshua Blevins, and Mai’jour Smith; one brother, Dennis Smethers; one sister, Debra Kriemes; two nephews, Dennis Smethers and Brian Kriemes; and two nieces, Mindy Ulery and Samantha Smethers.

The funeral service will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
