Katrina J. (Hizer) Beattie 73, of Sherman, IL died at 8:07 pm, Sunday, January 29, 2023 at Springfield Memorial Hospital. She was born October 22, 1949 in Logansport, IN, to Lawrence and Dorothy (McLochlin) Hizer. She married Donald “Mark” Beattie on June 28, 1985 and he survives.
Also surviving are two children, Jason D. Smith of Sherman, IL, and Dr. Sarah A. Smith (Kelly Brent) of Springfield, IL; five grandchildren, Quentin Smith, Makaeda Matthews-Smith, Gavin Smith, Gabrielle Smith and Alexis Smith; one sister, Marcia Campbell of Miramar Lakes, FL; two brothers, John Hizer of Kewanna, IN and Cresswell (Lynn) Hizer of Indianapolis, IN and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Raymond Warfield, and one infant brother, Lawrence Hizer, Jr.
Katrina was a graduate of Kewanna High School, Kewanna, IN. She attended Ball State University, graduated from Indiana University in South Bend, IN. and continued graduate studies at Illinois State University. She was a retired Elementary and Special Education teacher, having worked for Athens, IL School District and St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Springfield, IL.
She was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Sherman and was a Eucharistic minister. Katrina was a member of the Global Volunteers Network and traveled the world to help teach underprivileged and orphaned children in China, Romania, Cuba and the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana. She was a volunteer at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum for twelve years and she also volunteered at the Adult Learning Center. She was an avid reader, enjoyed extensive travel and was a budding amateur artist and a history buff.
Private family services were held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Global Volunteers Network, Doctors Without Borders, or the Animal Protective League.
