William “Bill” Harry Logan

William Harry Logan, 84, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2022 after a brief illness. He was born in Dallas, Texas to James and Marian Logan, and joined the US Navy in 1953. He served his country for more than 26 years, including two tours in Vietnam, where he saw combat and was decorated for valor. Subsequently, he earned a degree in mathematics from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. After retirement in 1979 as the senior Chief Warrant Officer (CWO4) in the US Navy, he pursued a PhD at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He worked in information technology and statistics as his second career.

Bill Logan was a renaissance man. He taught himself classical guitar and ragtime piano, complementing his deep interest in classical music and opera. He studied voice and was a talented singer. After first appearing onstage alongside his son in 1978, he embarked on a long and illustrious career in the theater. He played many different roles in the works of Shakespeare, culminating in his performance of King Lear. But his true love was black-and-white photography: he captured tens of thousands of images over 50 years and had his own darkroom for decades. Bill worked with noted photographers such as Ansel Adams and Cole and Brett Weston, and also co-owned the Blue Ridge School of Photography in Flat Rock, NC. His other passions included motorcycle touring, astronomy, archery, fly fishing and fine Scotch (albeit with ice).

He lived life to the fullest.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife Susan and his son Kerry, and is survived by sister Ann Sheptak, his first wife Lynette Buchanan, his children Kimberly, Kristopher and Kendall, and daughter-in-law Jennifer. He loved and cherished his seven grandchildren, Lucy and Michael Hynes, Bella, Patrick and Kevin Logan, and Kendra Logan.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at the Kirby Chapel at Shuler Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 26th at 5:00pm.
