Willard “Bill” Nagel Sperry, 92, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Marengo, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2022, at UnityPoint Transitional Care in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In agreement with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Family will greet friends and family from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. A Funeral Liturgy outside of the Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at the funeral home with Deacon Dennis Ternes officiating. Committal services with military honors will follow at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.

Bill was born on Nov. 17, 1929, in Marengo, the son of Glen and Charlotte (Powell) Sperry. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, until he was honorably discharged. On Sep. 19, 1955, Bill was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Wilhelm. He worked as an appliance repairman for A&H Appliance in Marion. Bill later became owner and operator of Sperry’s Appliance Service and worked for many years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Bill’s favorite pastime was fishing. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bill is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 67 years, Betty Sperry of Marion; son, Jeff (Pat) Sperry of Marion; son-in-law, Doug Veal of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Brett (Laura) Sperry of Marion, Justin (Meghan) Sperry of Downers Grove, Ill., Ashley (Tyler) Johnson of Marion, Melissa (Phil) Workman of Marion and Amy (Nick) Sagan of Anamosa, Iowa; 10 great-grandchildren, Danica Sperry, Blaine Sperry, Alessandra Sperry, Ashton Sperry, Taelynn Johnson, Dax Johnson, Alexander Workman, Aubrey Workman, Elijah Sagan and Isaac Sagan; three brothers, Gerald Sperry of Cedar Rapids, John (Jan) Sperry of Hiawatha, Iowa, and Dale (Jenny) Sperry of Marengo, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Thelma Filling; and daughter, Linda Veal.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bill’s memory may be made to the Ed & Joan Hemphill Hospice Unit at St. Luke’s Hospital at 290 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE, No. 100, in Cedar Rapids, IA 52402.
