Verna Pieper, 86, of Iowa City, passed away on April 28, 2024 at her residence.

Verna’s family will gather for her funeral at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City. Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery.

Verna was born on August 3, 1937 in Oxford Junction, Iowa to Alfred and Erma (Hodgen) Clapp. Following graduation from Oxford Junction High School (where she was an All-State Basketball Player), she attended the University of Northern Iowa.

Verna married Richard “Dick” Pieper on October 14, 1955 in Oxford Junction and to this union, three children were born.

Verna was a devoted wife and mother, tending to the home and raising three children. When the kids were older, she worked as a secretary for the Iowa City school district and could be found substituting for other secretaries well into her 70’s. She loved teaching and enjoyed the students.

In her spare time, she enjoyed walking, sewing, reading, making jewelry, doing puzzles and baking goodies.

Verna is survived by her three children: Bryan (Kathy) Pieper, Mark (Kelly) Pieper and Renae (Jess) Lopez; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren as well as her sister, Joyce Brandt. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Dick and two brothers: Robert and Leonard Clapp.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Croix Hospice; especially to Julie and Liz for their wonderful care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Croix Hospice.
