Thomas “Tom” George Smith, 69, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023. Papich- Kuba Funeral Service, Cedar Rapids is serving the family.

Tom was born on June 2, 1954, in Canton, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Bolinger Smith and Mary Louise Smith.

He is survived by his son, Ryan Smith; his sister, Sue Clyde; his brother, Steve Smith; his sister-in-law, Janice Miller-Smith; his granddaughter, Mariah Bonner; and his nephews, Troy, Travis and Josh Smith; as well as his niece, Janell Smith.

Tom attended George Washington High School where he was on the swim team, and played trumpet in the marching band.

He later pursued higher education at Kirkwood Community College. Tom had a successful career in food service management and was known for his exceptional skills in the culinary industry.

In 1984 Tom moved his family to Gainesville, Fla., where he continued his career in food service management. He changed careers and spent the last 20 years that he lived in Florida as a cab driver for the Gainesville Cab Company. In 2012 Tom moved to Marquette, Mich., where he lived with his family until returning to Cedar Rapids in 2021.

In his free time, Tom enjoyed fishing, playing the harmonica, playing nine ball, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He found solace and joy in these hobbies, which brought him closer to his loved ones and allowed him to appreciate the simple pleasures of life.

In memory of Thomas George Smith, contributions can be made to the National Hydrocephalus Foundation. This organization is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by hydrocephalus, a condition close to Thomas’s heart.

Tom will be dearly missed by all who knew him and his memory will live on through the love and laughter he shared with his family and friends.
