Thomas L. Leather

Thomas L. Leather, age 78, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, March 12, 2021 after a year and a half battle with kidney cancer. He was born March 7, 1943 to Robert S. Leather and Mary Backensto Leather.

Tom graduated from Madison High School in 1961. He was a hard worker and at the age of 13 began working on a farm in the summer. By the time he graduated, he owned his own new 1962 Chevy. In 1962, he met Carol Henry and they were married on April 11, 1964. He worked at Mansfield Tire for 11 years and retired from Leppert Machine Co. in 2016 after 33 years at the age of 74. Tom was always resolute in his actions, be it working on his truck, supporting his grandkids at school and athletic events, helping to raise three daughters, or serving as a loving and supporting husband to his wife, Carol for over 50 years. He loved to hunt deer and turkey, go to field trials with his family, race his dogs and go to car shows with his 1968 Chevy truck.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol; two daughters, Cindy Murphy (Brian) of Mansfield and Kristin Sprague (Tim) of Muscatine, Iowa; four grandsons, Max Murphy of Cleveland, Joshua and Cody Shambre both of Mansfield and James Sprague of Muscatine, Iowa; brother, Robert L. Leather (Judy) of Florida; sister, Carol S. Roberts of Mansfield; brother-in-law, Donald Henry (Barbara) of North Carolina; son-in-law, Adam Shambre; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Pamela Sue Shambre in 2016; and brother-in-law, Charles Roberts.

The family would like to say a special thank you to LeeAnn, Katrina and the rest of the staff at Southern Care Hospice and to the doctors and nurses at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 18, 2021 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 South Diamond Street, Mansfield. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 19, 2021 beginning at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Christine Bell officiating. He will be laid to rest in Windsor Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to an organization of your choice.
