Sydney H. Letz, Jr.

Sydney H. Letz, Jr., 81, of Springfield, passed away on Monday, May 30, 2022 at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was born on May 6, 1941, in Springfield, the son of Sydney H. and Dorothy J. (Jaspers) Letz, Sr. He married Tracey D. Donathan on November 29, 2020 and she survives.
Also surviving are seven children, Sydney H. Letz III of Springfield, Robert (Cindy) Letz of Riverton, Carlinda (Walt) Skube, Christopher (Jackie) Letz and Earlene (Rick) Larson, all of Springfield, Wendy (Moe) Angeli of Taylorville, and Kandey Angeli of Rochester; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Linda K. Bricker and Judy Letz; brother, Loren Letz; son, Kevin E. Letz; and two grandsons, Dustin Dishon and Charles Holler.
Sydney retired in 1998 as Battallion Chief with the Springfield Fire Department after 31 years of service. He went on to retire as a Deputy Coroner for the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office in 2020. He was previously a captain and instructor for the Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
He was a United States Navy veteran serving in special operations.
Sydney was a resident of Springfield all his life. He was an avid hunter and owned Letz Hunt and Sports, Inc. for 25 years. He enjoyed bowling, was a Vice President, then President of the Bowling Association League and was nominated into the Hall of Fame. He also was a Republican Precinct Committeeman. He belonged to the Sangamon County Rescue Squad and Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department.
Visitation: 2 – 5 pm, Sunday, June 5, 2022 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Funeral Service: 11:30 am, Monday, June 6, 2022 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with Reverend Ronald Waltrip officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
