Sandra K. Fuhrmeister, 87 of Iowa City, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, with burial to follow at the Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her memory. Sandra Kay Halferty was born Sept. 14, 1935, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Donald and Ruth (Lindgren) Halferty. She attended and graduated from Burlington High School in 1953. She was united in marriage to William D. “Bill” Fuhrmeister on May 5, 1956, at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. For over 33 years, she worked for the Veterans Administration Hospitals not only in Iowa City but in South Dakota and Kansas City. While her children were young, she worked/supported her home church, Zion Lutheran Church in the office for a short time.

Sandra’s faith was very important to her life, she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church since their marriage, here she enjoyed being active in many things, but one that was so important was the Bell Ringers. She also enjoyed many other activities throughout her lifetime, bowling in area leagues, playing cards euchre and cribbage, crossword puzzles, and of course her family! Her children, especially her grandsons and her extended family meant the world to her.

Her family includes her two children, Susan Fuhrmeister and Tim Fuhrmeister; grandsons, Phineas Fuhrmeister and Riley Lonngren; sister, Judy Kinner (Bill); sisters-in-law, Pamela Halferty and Mary Fuhrmeister; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Harold and Judith McMillan and Henry and Hilma Lindgren; parents; infant daughter, Debra Marie Fuhrmeister; husband, Bill; brother, Donald Halferty; and brother and sisters-in-law, Pat sand Joe Driscoll, Keith Fuhrmeister, and Ted and Marlene Fuhrmeister.
