Rosemary Yvonne Hays, 64, of Hiawatha, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Private family burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Rosemary is survived by her daughters, Jennifer (Bill) Filter of Marion and Mary Kinne of Cedar Rapids; son, Ryan (Martha) Hays of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Luke Bradley, Jocelyn Kinne, Alexandra Filter, William Filter III, Emerson Hays and Maxwell Hays; sisters, Judith (Tom) Blair and Jane (Larry) Masur; brothers, Neil (Mark) Fagan and Keith (Peg) Fagan; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Richard.

Rosemary was born on Oct. 20, 1958, in Missouri Valley, daughter of Kenneth and Julia Tierney Fagan. She graduated in 1977 from Logan Magnolia High School, Logan and received a master’s degree in special education from the University of Iowa. On Feb. 27, 1981, Rosemary married Richard Hays at St. Patrick Catholic Church. She was a special education teacher for the Cedar Rapids Community School District, retiring in 2019.

Rosemary was giving and pure at heart. She enjoyed volunteering at the Catholic Worker House, Central Furniture Rescue, St. Patrick Fish Fry’s and supporting her parish. Rosemary liked attending book club, gardening and having coffee with her friends. She attended all of her kids and grandkids events and made all holidays special for her family. Rosemary was a wonderful person who was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

A note from her kids: Mom and Dad loved to travel and be together, but we know dad has been missing the love of his life. We are sad to see her go, but happy they can spend their anniversary together in eternal life.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Central Iowa Furniture Rescue or St. John of the Cross Catholic Worker House.
